Fuel Pump Relay Wiring
Hi all,
I need to replace my fuel pump relay and I'm unsure about some of the wiring. In the Bentley manual on the Diagram D foldout wiring diagram there's:
J17 - Fuel Pump relay
...and...
J16 - Power supply relay fuel fuel injection
On the diagram there's a blue and yellow wire going from 86 (J17) to 87 on (J16).
What does it do?
Thanks!

I think (!) the fuel injection (ecu) relay is under the back seat on a Fastback (is it the same for a FI Variant?) and powers the ecu and the fuel pump relay (blue/yellow). The ecu decides to make the pump run by grounding the fuel pump relay (grey wire). The red wires on the fuel pump relay go to the fuel pump (thicker) and the ecu (thinner) so it knows the pump is being powered up.
I think I've worked that out from the diagram - you've got the best manual for FI anyway, and in colour too, which is nice. I wonder what they saved by not bothering for later editions.
Dave.

Cool, thanks Dave. I've removed the ECU but will be keeping the relays and pump. It sounds like the ECU tells the pump to run. I guess it's also the ECU that also takes care of the initial 2 sec pump run when the ignition is first switched on?
I'll put it back as it was and see how it behaves.
Thanks.

Yes, when the ignition is first turned on, the ecu grounds the pump relay to run the pump for a couple of seconds to pressurise the lines. Then it runs it while cranking and when the engine is running, but not if it isn't - saves flooding the car with fuel in an accident.
Not sure why you are removing the ecu. Are you changing the injection system? The injection pump won't be right for carbs - way too much pressure.

Hi Dave, I'm going to run carbs for a while. I've got a return style pressure regulator which takes in high pressure fuel but only puts out low pressure for the carbs and returns the rest to the tank.
Sounds like the stock wiring won't do what I need. I'll have a play and see what I can do.
Thanks for the help.

Cool! Found the grey wire in the engine bay. You're right Dave once grounded, I can hear the fuel pump relay click and the pump going.
Just need to find the best way to hook it back up.

Try to incorporate an emergency switch to turn the pump off if the car has a crash! I understand there's a Ford switch that does this, but I'm not sure of the part number.
Alternatively, just get an electric fuel pump for carbs and close off the return hose.

Hi Dave, will do. I found this diagram which looks to be what I'm after:

The reg and hose are pretty much all hooked up now. I will switch back to (an aftermarket) FI at some point, hence the extra legwork now.

Interesting points made in the volkszone forum about adding protective circuitry to avoid pumping fuel if the engine stops. The additional benefit of an electric fuel switching off if the generator light came on wouldn't be of benefit in a Type 3 as we don't rely on the generator belt to run the fan, but if your engine stops due to no fuel when there's no oil pressure, that might be handy in saving the engine from major damage.

Hi Dave, you're right although I think it's more for stalling rather than overheating.
I've converted to upright so it's effectively a type 1 setup now. Just got to make the additional tinware to seal it off.

So you've now got a belt-driven fan, and no luggage space in the back, plus the need to seal the engine from the exhaust and cooling air outlets. Got to be some advantages to you, but I think I've missed them!

Hi Dave, thanks for cheering me up!
It's a big bore, high compression engine, so it needs some proper cooling. It's got a RAT DTM cooling fanshroud which incorporates a larger Type 4 oil cooler (plus an external Mocal cooler) and a welded Berg fan.
I've also fitted a firewall so there is a bit of space between the engine and the rear seat, but that's more for safety.

You must have worked out by now I'm an old fuddy-duddy, which should cheer you up anyway! Not quite a Victor Meldrew, but give me time.
